1999-2000 Marymount University Catalog
Center for Comprehensive Learning

The Marymount University Center for Comprehensive Learning offers a variety of lifelong educational opportunities for the adult learner. From its offices at the Ballston and Loudoun campuses, the Center coordinates undergraduate and graduate courses at the Loudoun Campus; manages academic programs on-site at agency, corporate, and military locations; and offers continuing education or training programs that meet the professional or business needs of northern Virginia employers. The Center carries out the mission of the University to combine liberal education and career enhancement by assisting adult students to complete degrees, acquire new certifications and skills, and pursue intellectual interests.

The Center for Comprehensive Learning manages the program in Organizational Leadership and Innovation (OLI) and the Leading and Managing Change Certificate. These programs focus on providing students with skills and knowledge that are necessary to maintain and increase their organizations’ competitive advantage, through creative and innovative approaches to leadership and management.

See page 143 for more information on the OLI program and page 191 for the Leading and Managing Change certificate program.

Portfolio Assessment and Credit by Examination (PACE)

Marymount University’s Portfolio Assessment and Credit by Examination (P.A.C.E.) program gives returning students the flexibility they need to complete their bachelor’s degree with less financial and time commitment than traditional programs. Through P.A.C.E., students can utilize the knowledge and experience they have gained through independent study, work, travel, volunteer activities, and life experience to earn up to 30 credits toward their undergraduate degree.

To qualify for Marymount University’s P.A.C.E. program, students must

· be currently enrolled in a Marymount University Degree Program, and

· enroll in Liberal Studies Readings and Portfolio Development (LS 300).

To earn credits through portfolio assessment, students must

· meet with an academic advisor to determine if portfolio assessment is appropriate for them;

· successfully complete LS 300;

· produce a separate portfolio for each course for which they are taking credit;

· choose only those courses which are listed in Marymount’s catalog;

· pay a non-refundable assessment fee of $100 per portfolio; and

· pay $150 per credit earned.

To earn credits by examination, students must

· meet with an academic advisor to determine if credit by examination is appropriate for them;

· receive a passing score on any CLEP, ACT/PEP, or DANTES examinations approved for credit by Marymount University; and

· arrange for the score to be sent to the Center for Comprehensive Learning.

Corporate University

Since the demands of our knowledge-based economy make it essential for employees to engage in continuous learning, corporations are becoming increasingly interested in corporate-university partnerships to support growth and develop a competitive advantage.

Corporate-university partnerships link and align training and education to the organization’s business objectives; first, by identifying desired skill sets or job competencies needed and, second, by integrating training and education within the organization.

The Center for Comprehensive Learning, as part of Marymount University’s outreach to local corporations and government agencies, develops corporate-university partnerships. For example, Marymount currently has a large on-site instructional commitment with the Patent and Trademark Office University.
