1999-2000 Marymount University Catalog
Library and Learning Services

Dean: Dr. Lynn Scott Cochrane

Emerson G. Reinsch Library

The Emerson G. Reinsch Library is an integral part of the learning resources of the University. The collection and services reflect

both the curricula and the general informational needs of the University. The Library offers a collection of more than 177,000 volumes and 1,100 journal titles to all members of the University, Consortium for Continuing Higher Education in Northern Virginia, and Washington Research Library Consortium.

Library and Learning Services facilitates learning, teaching, scholarship, and appreciation of lifelong learning by providing Marymount University students, faculty and staff, the members of the Washington Research Library Consortium, and the local communities with access to information, library materials, and learning services.

The Library’s goal is to respond to the changing needs of the faculty, staff, and students who make up the University community. The Reinsch Library staff works closely with faculty in planning and conducting student orientation to library skills and research. Reference assistance is available during all library hours.

Special services of the Library include on-line reference and full-text databases, Internet workstations, group study rooms, photocopiers, and microform readers and printers. The microform area contains ERIC microfiche, periodicals and newspapers in microfilm and microfiche, and annual reports for Fortune 500 companies in microfiche. A curriculum lab houses educational support materials. Interlibrary loans are arranged if materials are unavailable in our collection.

The Mabelle Wilhelmina Boldt Reading Room contains interior design and art materials from the collection of the former International Institute of Interior Design library.

Marymount University faculty and students may use most area libraries. Borrowing privileges (with a current Marymount ID) are granted by Northern Virginia Community College and the Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Loudoun, and Prince William public libraries.

Faculty and students may access some libraries participating in The Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area: Georgetown University, Howard University, Mount Vernon College, and Trinity College.

Marymount University is a member of the Washington Research Library Consortium (WRLC), which, in addition to Marymount, includes The American University, The Catholic University of America, Gallaudet University, George Mason University, The George Washington University, and the University of the District of Columbia. An on-line public access catalog incorporates the total book and periodical holdings of the WRLC universities and is available to Marymount students and faculty on-site and through computer access from homes and offices. Periodical indexes and full-text databases are also accessible on the system. All Marymount faculty and students may borrow materials directly from these university libraries or through a special interlibrary loan system. Material requests are processed on-line, and a delivery service ensures material delivery to the home campus.

Learning Resource Center

The Learning Resource Center (LRC) is a year-round academic counseling and learning center designed to support and enhance University instructional programs. Staffed by specialists in English, history, and mathematics and by both graduate and undergraduate peer tutors, the LRC provides assistance in writing, grammar, math, and study skills for a variety of courses. Through the LRC, faculty can arrange for supplementary instruction, individual assistance, and workshops to review specific course objectives.

The LRC also administers freshman placement examinations, the American College Testing Program COMP test, and general education validation exams. It maintains a Test Center for the convenience of faculty

and students. Students seeking an assessment of their math and English skills may request diagnostic testing and evaluation at the Learning Resource Center.

Instructional Media Center

Using the specialized equipment of the Instructional Media Center (IMC), students participate in supplementary instruction and production prearranged by their instructors. Large and small rooms are furnished with audio, video, and multimedia equipment. The IMC also provides audiovisual support for classroom use throughout the campus or for group assignments.

The Video Production Studio offers a wide range of AV capabilities including videotaping and video editing. The Graphics Production Room creates slide/tape shows, overhead transparencies, computer graphics, and 35 mm color slides. Laminating and storyboard equipment is available for use by students and faculty.
