BT 521 Electronic Commerce (3)
Provides a comprehensive understanding of electronic commerce (EC). The course focuses on what EC is, how it works, and how it differs from traditional commerce and marketing. Examines opportunities and threats EC poses to traditional commerce and the division of labor. Implications for business, government, and international organizations are discussed. Students visit Web sites to explore EC concepts and develop their own EC Web site. Prerequisites: IM 501, IM 503.
BT 522 Strategic Uses of the World Wide Web (3)
Examines the way the World Wide Web is used today in business to achieve strategic objectives. Provides a functional understanding of the infrastructure that supports the Web. Identifies changing demographics of Web users and the impact of the Web on society. Surveys applications of the Web by business, government, and nonprofit organizations. Prerequisites: IM 501, IM 503.
BT 523 Knowledge Management (3)
This course focuses on the ways in which organizations create, identify, capture, evaluate, and use knowledge for competitive advantage. The course develops a framework for the assessment of an organization's knowledge needs, the evaluation of key decision processes, as well as the information demands, usage patterns, content requirements of knowledge workers, and identification of behavioral and cultural barriers that impede effective knowledge use. Prerequisites: IM 501, IM 503.
BT 570 Intelligent Agents (3)
Provides an understanding of the concepts, tools, and applications involved in using intelligent agents to assist managers in solving real-world problems. Students will have the opportunity for hands-on involvement. Prerequisites: IM 501, IM 503.
BT 571 Systems Thinking, Modeling, and Simulation (3)
Introduces the student to systems thinking, a modern approach to analyzing complex interrelationships among the component parts of organizations, business processes, and the corporate environment. Explores the use of system dynamics software in modeling such systems and in simulating the often nonlinear and time-delayed effects of one component upon another. The student receives hands-on experience in developing and employing systems dynamics simulations in support of business process re-engineering cases. Finally, "management flight simulators," which are run with systems dynamics engines, are examined as a valuable management training device. Prerequisites: IM 501, IM 503.
BT 572 Information and Network Security (3)
Focuses on security issues concerning information and its communication in today's information technology environment. Basic problem areas at the individual, organizational, and national levels are addressed along with suggested means for control, reduction, and/or elimination. Students are provided information about consumer privacy, fraud protection, bulk e-mail (spam), information integrity, and available state-of-the-art defensive measures. Students are also provided the opportunity to consider course material within the framework of network and international regulatory concerns. Prerequisites: IM 501, IM 503.
