Secondary Education, 6-12 (M.Ed.)
This program is designed for persons who already have a B.A. or B.S. in any of the following content areas:
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Computer Science
- Earth and Space Science
- English
- General Science
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Social Studies
A total of 39 credits is required for completion of the M.Ed. in Secondary Education program. In order to maintain currency in the content area, students seeking a teaching license at the secondary level must have satisfactorily completed a course in their licensure endorsement area within five years prior to applying for a Virginia teaching license through Marymount.
Core Requirements for Licensure
Twenty-seven (27) credits are required: (ED 502 and ED 503 are required as the first courses in this program since they provide the foundation for all other courses.)
- ED 502 Foundations of Education (field experience: 10 hours)
- ED 503 Curriculum: Theory and Practice (field experience: 10 hours)
- ED 537 Reading Across the Curriculum: Secondary (field experience: 10 hours)
- ED 538 Secondary Teaching Methods (field experience: 20 hours)
- ED 554 Computers and Technology in the Classroom
- ED 570B Student Teaching: Secondary (field experience: 14 weeks)
- PS 505 Advanced Study of Individuals with Exceptionalities (field experience: 10 hours)
- PS 516 Adolescent Psychology
Additional Requirements for M.Ed.
Twelve (12) credits as follows:
- ED 526 Cross-cultural/International Curricula (field experience: 10 hours), or ED 565 Cross-cultural Education and the Language Arts (field experience: 10 hours)
- ED 550 Research Methods (field experience: 10 hours)
- ED 568 Teaching English and Social Studies in Middle/Secondary School (field experience: 10 hours) or ED 569 Teaching Science, Math, and Computer Science in Middle/Secondary School (field experience: 10 hours)
