Study Abroad

The Office of Study Abroad administers, supports, and coordinates all University programs taking place outside the U.S.

In today's international world, study abroad presents a meaningful component to liberal arts education. When combined with practical experience such as an internship, its value is even greater. Students abroad integrate into the daily life of the host country and its people.

The London Program

Marymount University offers a study abroad experience in England, a country linked to American culture through its history, literature, and traditions. Study and internship experiences in England do not require fluency in a foreign language, so the student can benefit fully from the stay abroad.

The London Program is offered in the fall, spring, and summer semesters to qualified junior and senior students. The fall and spring semester programs require full-time enrollment for 12-15 semester credits. The student enrolls in a London internship and in two to three courses that meet Liberal Arts Core requirements.

Applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75 and not be on disciplinary probation. A recommendation from the dean for Student Development and the approval of the appropriate School dean are required for registration. Students must have satisfied all financial obligations to the University as well. Full details about admission requirements, including deadlines for applications, can be found on the Study Abroad pages of the University Web site.

Special opportunities offered by the British setting are internship experiences in the London offices of British, American, and multinational firms; British department stores; health centers; schools; and television and radio stations.

Courses are structured around current London activities. For example, students in a drama course read and analyze a play in class, enjoy and critique its performance on the London stage, and, once each semester, have the opportunity to discuss the performance with the director or one of the principals.

Qualified students may also elect to enroll in one course for a maximum of three credits at one of the following London universities/institutes: The London Metropolitan University, the London College of Fashion, the Chelsea School of Art and Design, and the London College of Printing.

The London Program follows its own semester calendar and break periods. For current dates and costs, please consult the Study Abroad section of the University Web site. All dates and costs are subject to change, based on fluctuating international currency exchange rates.

Classes are held at the Marymount London Centre, located in the heart of London near the University of London and the British Museum. The Centre provides a library, a computer lab with e-mail access, and a student lounge. London Program students live in fully furnished studio apartments located within walking distance or a short bus ride from the London Centre. A thorough orientation to life in London is provided through a series of meetings that begin before departure from the U.S. and continue during the first week in England.

The London Summer Internship Program

Marymount offers a seven-week internship opportunity for both qualified undergraduate and graduate students. Graduate students in the School of Business Administration receive three credits for the internship and will be required to complete three credits of independent study. All other students receive six credits for the summer internship.

Participants will intern four days per week and take part in half-day weekly internship seminars. Internships are available in all discipline-related fields of study. Marymount will provide housing, on-site orientation, and staff support services, as well as the internship placement and supervision.

The London Graduate Business Program

Marymount University, in cooperation with London Metropolitan University (LMU), offers a full-time semester option during the fall and spring semesters for graduate students in Business. Qualified students will enroll for nine credits: six credits earned completing preapproved coursework in LMU's highly regarded MBA program and three credits in an international internship. Housing, internship placement, and on-site program staff support services are provided. Students should consult the School of Business Administration and Office of Study Abroad for additional information.

The Ireland Program

Marymount University offers a semester study program at the University of Limerick in Ireland. Students enroll in full-time coursework, earning 12 to 15 credits. Students must possess a minimum 2.9 GPA to qualify, and may choose courses in the humanities and social sciences, which will transfer either as Liberal Arts Core requirements or electives within the designated major. No internships are available. Students will reside in one of four on-campus university residence halls. Dates and fees may be found on the Marymount University Web site and are subject to change based upon foreign currency fluctuations.

The Italy Programs

Marymount has affiliations with The American University of Rome (AUR) and The Lorenzo de Medici Art Institute (LdM) in Florence, Italy. Both programs are open to qualified juniors and seniors who possess a minimum 3.0 GPA. Students may enroll in full-time coursework, including one mandatory course in an appropriate level of Italian language and culture. No internships are available.

Students interested in studying in Rome may choose from courses offered in Communications, Liberal Arts, Interdisciplinary Studies, Italian Studies, and Business Administration. AUR also offers an honors-level, six-credit course to qualified students.

Students may choose to live in AUR-provided apartments within walking or bus-ride distance to the university.

The Lorenzo de Medici Art Institute of Florence is ideal for students majoring in Fashion, Interior or Graphic Design, or in Art. LdM offers semester programs specializing in these areas; its curriculum includes Liberal Arts offerings. Students will enroll in full-time coursework, including a mandatory Italian language and culture course. No internships are available. LdM provides assistance in locating housing through local real estate agents in Florence as well as a limited number of spaces in small guest hotels.

Participation in each program is limited and competitive.

Transferring Study Abroad Credit

Students wishing to participate in study aboard programs not sponsored by Marymount must receive prior approval from their advisor, the dean of the School offering their major, and the Office of Study Abroad. Course approval forms for study abroad are available in the Office of Study Abroad.

To receive credit for study abroad programs not sponsored by Marymount, students must complete a course approval form before departure. Credits transferred from study abroad are not included in the University's 36-credit minimum residency requirement. Acceptance of credits earned in a study abroad program is at the discretion of the University. Work must be completed with a grade of C or better to be accepted.

Students studying abroad in programs not sponsored by Marymount must also maintain continuous registration at Marymount, or they will be considered separated from the University. See page 35 for details on continuous registration.
