LA 248 Business Law I (3)
A study of the rights and relationships involved in the laws of contracts, sales and agency, including the Uniform Commercial Code. Offered fall semester only. Prerequisite: MGT 123.
LA 249 Business Law II (3)
A study of the law relating to the development and operations of partnerships, limited liability companies, and corporations, and of the government agencies that regulate business. Offered spring semester only. Prerequisite: LA 248.
LA 280 Introduction to the Legal System (3)
A study of various sources of law and federal and state court systems. Survey of various kinds of law practices, role of attorneys and paralegals, ethics, and legal research. Offered fall semester only.
LA 301 Civil Litigation (3)
An introduction to the rules governing lawsuits, the jurisdiction of federal and state courts, and the procedures in preparing materials for trial. Emphasis on techniques of client interview, information gathering, organizing, and retrieval. Offered spring semester only. Prerequisite: LA 280.v
LA 302 Criminal Litigation (3)
An introduction to the rules governing criminal procedure from indictment, pretrial motions, plea bargains, jury selection, through prosecution by the trial court, emphasizing the role of the paralegal in the process. Offered fall semester only. Prerequisite: LA 280.
LA 303 Litigation Support Technology (3)
An introduction to current litigation software products and instruction on database creation, management, and use; deposition management; courtroom presentations; and overall case management. See department chair for course offering schedule. Prerequisite: LA 301. This course contains a significant component in the use of computers.
LA 305 General Practice I (3)
An introduction to the laws of estates and trusts, bankruptcy, and legal ethics. Practice in preparing materials for probate, estate planning, and bankruptcy filings. Offered fall semester only. Prerequisite: LA 280.
LA 306 General Practice II (3)
An introduction to the laws of partnerships, limited liability companies, family law, corporations, and legal ethics. Emphasis on preparation of documents and materials for filing. Offered spring semester only. Prerequisite: LA 305.
LA 391 Legal Research and Writing (3)
A study of the terms and research tools used in legal research. Presents a clear understanding of legal terminology and its use in the preparation of legal briefs, memoranda, and opinions. Develops students’ legal-research skills and gives students legal-writing experience. Offered fall semester only. Prerequisite: LA 280. This course contains a significant component in the use of computers.
LA 408 Real Estate Practices (3)
A study of real estate documents and financing instruments with emphasis on their preparation, abstracting, and recording. Prerequisite: LA 280.
LA 409 Public Law and Procedure (3)
An introduction to the federal legislative process, the federal regulatory process, and federal administrative agency procedures, as well as state legislative and regulatory procedures. Offered fall semester only. Prerequisite: LA 280.
LA 430 Legal and Current Issues in Human Resource Management (3)
A study of current trends, issues, recent legislation, court decisions, and regulations as they affect the human resource function. Offered spring semester only. Prerequisite: LA 280.
LA 433 Research (1-6)
A student in this course will conduct collaborative research (scholarly work leading to new knowledge) under the direction of a faculty member. Refer to the Marymount Academic Research Initiative (MARI) guidelines. Prerequisite: application and approval of department chair.
LA 490 Internship (3-6)
Senior students receive field experience in a cooperating corporation or law firm in the Washington metropolitan area. The experience is monitored by the department chair and an attorney in the cooperating corporation or firm. Prerequisites: permission of department chair, senior status, minimum of 90 credit hours with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better, and a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better in all Business courses.
LA 491 Computerized Legal Research (3)
An introduction to the use of Lexis, Westlaw, and the Internet in the legal environment, and their use in the preparation of research documents in various areas of the law. This course is a continuation of LA 391. Offered spring semester only. Prerequisite: LA 391. This course contains a significant component in the use of computers.
LA 500 Introduction to the Legal System (3)
A study of law and federal and state court systems. Surveys various kinds of law practices, the roles of attorneys and paralegals, ethics, and legal research. Substantive reports following visits to local courts are required. Offered fall semester only.
LA 501 Civil and Criminal Procedure (3)
Introduction to the court system and the basis upon which the tribunals hear and resolve legal disputes. Focuses on preparation of documents for all stages of trial work. Overview of the federal rules of civil and criminal procedure and of constitutional issues governing these procedures. Offered fall semester only.
LA 505 General Legal Procedures (3)
A study of areas of general legal practice, including family law, trusts and estates, bankruptcy, torts, intellectual property, and business entity law. Focuses on preparation of documents used in these practice areas. Offered fall semester only.
LA 509 Public Law and Administrative Procedures (3)
Introduction to the federal and state legislative and regulatory processes. Overview of the appeals process for Immigration, Social Security, and Provider Appeals and the hearing processes of the NLRB, ICC, FTC, and FCC. Focuses on preparation of legislative and administrative documents. Offered spring semester only.
LA 535 Personnel Law (3)
Focuses on the dynamic relationship between legal and personnel concepts and how human resource practitioners can help organizations avoid exposure to litigation. Students analyze and apply appropriate rules of law to problem situations.
LA 540 Health Care Law (3)
Provides students with a review of medical-legal aspects of health care. The course focuses on major legal issues of malpractice, antitrust, insurance law, patient rights, and provider liability. Offered fall semester only. Prerequisites: HCM 510 and HCM 535, or permission of department chair.
LA 550 Law Office Management (3)
Provides an overview of management principles and their application to the law firm or corporate law department. Focuses on how the law firm generates revenue and the importance of time management and the control of expenses. Surveys facilities management, information management, basic accounting and finance, and personnel management issues. Prerequisite: at least 15 credits in graduate LA courses or permission of department chair. Offered spring semester only.
LA 561 Law and the Business Environment (3)
Examines the role of law and legal procedure in management of business enterprises, concentrating on business organization, liability issues, employment law, consumer protection, antitrust, securities, and legal-ethical concerns. Provides a broad understanding of reciprocal influence of business and legislation.
LA 562 Law, Computers, and the Internet (3)
Overview of the legal issues arising in computer technology: patent, copyright, trademark, computer contracts, employment contracts, trade secrets, licensing, right to privacy, First Amendment rights, and legal ethics. Offered spring semester only. Recommended: LA 561.
LA 590 Supervising Legal Research and Writing (3)
A study of terms, publications, and legal research tools and techniques. Provides students with a clear understanding of legal terminology and its use in the preparation of legal briefs, memoranda, and opinions as students perform legal research and draft legal documents. Emphasizes proper citation format. Offered fall semester only.
LA 591 Advanced Legal Research and Writing/Computerized Legal Research (3)
Provides experience in using Lexis, Westlaw, and the Internet in conducting legal research and provides advanced legal writing instruction. Emphasizes proper citation format. Offered spring semester only. Prerequisite: LA 590.
LA 595 Paralegal Seminar on Constitutional Law (3)
Introduces students to current legal issues affecting paralegals working in law firms or corporate law departments. Students are required to follow current Supreme Court cases and state bar actions/regulations impacting the practice of law. See department chair for course offering schedule. Prerequisite: permission of department chair.
