Health Care Management (M.S.)

The University’s close proximity to federal agencies, Capitol Hill, and national provider professional associations allows the structure and content of the Health Care Management curriculum to prepare graduates to perform effectively in both the provision of health care services and the development of future health care policy.

The program provides core business skills integrated with specialized training in the unique characteristics of the health care environment. The curriculum focuses on the current and relevant issues in health care and encompasses the fast-paced and dynamic changes in this field. The program prepares students with experience in either health care or business for a career in hospital administration, with managed care facilities, or as financial/operational managers in HMOs.

The program is committed to exhibiting the highest professional and ethical standards, addressing the needs of both individuals and health care organizations, providing health care education to the local community, and encouraging participation in community service. The program is also dedicated to contributing to the field through publication, scholarship, and community activities.

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to

  • evaluate specific health care challenges by applying the highest ethical, moral, and professional standards to make decisions that promote quality outcomes;
  • analyze policy at both the organizational and government levels using knowledge of current practices and historical policy trends as well as systems thinking;
  • develop policies for either organizations or government decision makers by applying policy analysis, including an in-depth understanding of legal and regulatory requirements, to a knowledge of organizations' current structures and procedures;
  • implement policy at either the organizational or government level by responding effectively to regulatory and policy directives and advocating for appropriate change;
  • effectively administer health care organizations or departments using critical and analytical thinking, including problem solving skills, oral and written communication skills, information technology systems applied effectively to a health care setting, process management including project planning and implementation, human resource management, financial and economic analysis, statistical analysis, and population and status assessment; and
  • develop strategies that promote the success and ongoing improvement of the organization using performance measurement, effective team participation including interpersonal awareness and emotional intelligence, innovative thinking and action, a strategic orientation, and leadership.

The M.S. in Health Care Management program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME).

Admission Requirements: In addition to Universitywide and School of Business Administration admission requirements, applicants should have a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 and a GMAT score of at least 400 (or the GRE equivalent). All applicants must also submit a personal statement. Statements will be judged for clarity, style, and the ability of the applicant to communicate effectively. Finally, qualified candidates will be interviewed by the program director and/or a designee who will judge potential students' professionalism and oral communication skills.

In keeping with the policies of the School of Business Administration, applicants may request a waiver of the standardized test requirement if they meet all other minimum requirements and one or both of the following conditions: provide evidence of having earned an advanced degree and/or show significant professional work experience of five or more years that demonstrates career progression.

Minimum Grade Requirements: A minimum grade of C is required to receive credit for a course in the Health Care Management program. All graduate SBA students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Health Care Management/Business Administration Dual Degree (M.S./M.B.A.)

The M.S. in Health Care Management/M.B.A. dual degree program is designed to meet the needs of those students desiring a strong business background with a prominent emphasis on the U.S. health care industry. A dual degree will prepare students for middle- or senior-level management positions in hospitals or other health care organizations.

Upon successful completion of all dual degree requirements, students will receive both an M.S. in Health Care Management and an M.B.A. Students successfully completing both degrees will achieve the outcomes of each of the two programs. Health Care Management/Information Technology Dual Degree (M.S./M.S.)

The M.S. in Health Care Management/M.S. in Information Technology dual degree program is designed to meet the needs of those students who wish to work in the growing field of health care information technology. Students will develop strategies for implementing information technology systems specifically designed to aid health care professionals in managing patient records, payments, and other financial data, among other things.

Upon successful completion of all dual degree requirements, students will receive both an M.S. in Health Care Management and an M.S. in Information Technology.
