Health Care Management

Health Care Management (M.S.)

The mission of Marymount University's M.S. in health care management program is to prepare students to compete in the current health care management marketplace.

The program aims to develop students' managerial and leadership skills, while sharpening their policy perspectives on health care issues. Graduates of the program are prepared to formulate, evaluate, and implement effective and efficient health care delivery systems and policies for diverse populations while acting in accordance with the highest professional standards.

Given the university's location in the national capital region, these skills are critical in preparing students for successful careers in varied health care settings, including hospitals, managed care organizations, government agencies, health-related associations, and health care consulting firms. Courses offered in conjunction with the Center for Global Education allow students to study and work in other countries, while fostering a global perspective on health care issues.

Finally, the program cultivates in these health care leaders strong dedication to ethical and moral standards as well as to community service. These values are advanced through service projects and internship opportunities available locally, nationally, and internationally.

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to

  • evaluate specific health care challenges by applying the highest ethical, moral, and professional standards to make decisions that promote quality outcomes;
  • analyze policy at both the organizational and government levels using knowledge of current practices and historical policy trends as well as systems thinking;
  • develop policies for either organizations or government decision makers by applying policy analysis, including an in-depth understanding of legal and regulatory requirements, to a knowledge of organizations' current structures and procedures;
  • implement policy at either the organizational or government level by responding effectively to regulatory and policy directives and advocating for appropriate change;
  • effectively administer health care organizations or departments using critical and analytical thinking, including problem solving skills, oral and written communication skills, information technology systems applied effectively to a health care setting, process management including project planning and implementation, human resource management, financial and economic analysis, statistical analysis, and population and status assessment; and
  • develop strategies that promote the success and ongoing improvement of the organization using performance measurement, effective team participation including interpersonal awareness and emotional intelligence, innovative thinking and action, a strategic orientation, and leadership.

The M.S. in health care management program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME).
