The University offers certificate programs for course credit to provide students with a credential in a specialized professional area.

A Marymount certificate program assures academic quality by:

  • normally requiring a minimum of 15 credit hours and a maximum of 24-25 credit hours;
  • offering only courses from the University catalog which have been approved by the Curriculum Committee and Faculty Council;
  • maintaining prerequisites for courses that normally have prerequisites;
  • specifying sequential enrollment where necessary;
  • requiring completion in a timely manner;
  • establishing minimum entrance requirements; and
  • meeting a clearly defined professional need.

Students receiving a certificate do not participate in graduation ceremonies.

Undergraduate Certificate Programs

SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

The School of Arts and Sciences offers an undergraduate certificate in Web Design.

Web Design Certificate

The 22-credit certificate in Web Design prepares students to create and maintain Web sites. Students study relevant computer programming and software applications.

The School of Business Administration offers certificates in designated professional areas after completion of the prescribed program of courses.

To be eligible for enrollment in a certificate program, students must have earned:

  • an associate degree from an accredited college or university and have five years of work experience, or
  • a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.

Students must complete the prescribed sequence of courses. Transfer credit will be accepted for prerequisite courses only. Core courses must be taken at Marymount University and certificate programs must be completed within five years of the date of matriculation.

School of Arts and Sciences

The School of Arts and Sciences offers a post-baccalaureate certificate in Computer Science for students who have previously earned a bachelor’s degree.

Computer Science Certificate

The Computer Science post-baccalaureate certificate is designed for individuals who want to prepare for entry-level positions in software development. It also provides the preparatory work necessary to enter Marymount’s Master of Science program in Computer Science.

To be eligible for enrollment, students must have:

  • a bachelor’s degree in any field of study, and
  • a knowledge of high school algebra and trigonometry.

Students with insufficient mathematics preparation will be advised to take appropriate undergraduate courses to prepare for the certificate program.

School of Business Administration

The School of Business Administration offers graduate certificates in designated professional areas after completion of the prescribed program of courses.

To be eligible for enrollment in a graduate certificate program, students must meet all regular graduate admissions requirements in the School of Business Administration except the standardized test requirement.

Once a student is enrolled in a graduate certificate program in the School of Business Administration, the student is subject to the same academic standards and performance rules as those that apply to degree-seeking students in the School of Business Administration.

Business Technologies Certificate

Marymount University offers a graduate-level certificate program in Business Technologies (BT). Students with limited preparation may be required to complete IM 501 Principles of Information Technology as a noncredit elective. The certificate requires 18 graduate credits, which include the following:

Information Resources Management Certificate

Marymount University offers an 18-credit Information Resources Management certificate (IRM). Courses have been selected to cover the major areas of information resources management and include software design, database management, telecommunications, and information management. IRM certificate students must be admitted to the graduate program in the School of Business Administration. The six courses needed for the IRM certificate are the following:

Instructional Design Certificate

Many corporations and government agencies require the use of systematic instructional design approaches. The Instructional Design certificate program prepares students for such environments by focusing on the assessment of performance problems, deciding when training is needed, specifying training needs, designing and developing training programs, and evaluating the results of training. Students applying for this certificate program must meet the admissions requirements for graduate programs in the School of Business Administration.

The certificate requires 15 graduate credits, which must include the following:

Management Studies Certificate

Marymount University offers a certificate in Management Studies for corporate or organization off-campus students who are supported by the Office of Corporate Outreach. The certificate requires 18 graduate credits which could be selected by the corporate or organizational sponsor from courses offered by the School of Business Administration. The six courses would be especially chosen to meet the needs of the individual organizations, but must be approved by the director of the Office of Corporate Outreach and the dean of the School of Business Administration. Students apply for this certificate on a nondegree basis, but can make a transition to a School of Business Administration degree program upon the successful completion of their certificate program. All certificate courses must be completed with a grade of B or better.

Organization Development Certificate

Marymount University offers an Organization Development (OD) certificate for students who wish to concentrate on OD applications and field work. The certificate requires 18 graduate credits, which include the following:

The Paralegal Studies certificate is offered for those students who have a bachelor’s degree and who wish to become certified paralegals. This certificate program is approved by the American Bar Association (ABA). Counseling Certificate

Individuals who already have a master’s degree in Counseling from an accredited institution and who are working toward certification as a professional counselor may opt for this certificate program, which consists of a minimum of 18 semester credits of graduate coursework. Courses must be selected in conjunction with a faculty advisor. Students apply for this certificate program on a nondegree basis.

Alternative Teacher Licensure Certificate

In an effort to meet the high demand for teachers in the northern Virginia area, Marymount University offers an alternative initial licensure certificate program for teacher preparation in the following areas: PK-6 (elementary), 6-12 (secondary in a content area), LD, and ESL. Marymount University’s initial licensure certificate program leading to alternative teacher licensure requires 18-27 hours of professional studies by all participants, pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, regardless of subject matter. The total number of hours required will depend on the student’s previous coursework on the undergraduate or graduate level. These programs fulfill the state’s Professional Studies requirements in the area of curriculum and instruction, human growth and development, foundations of education, and reading and language acquisition, and additional professional requirements set for each licensure area.

Individuals who wish to teach in Virginia’s K-12 schools, who have completed at least a bachelor’s degree, and who are not currently licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia are eligible to participate. This program does not automatically provide Virginia teaching licensure. Individuals will not apply for their Virginia professional teaching license through Marymount University, but must seek licensure through the school system that issues their provisional license. Individuals in this program who wish to obtain a master’s degree at Marymount University should contact the Graduate Admissions Office at

Catholic School Leadership Certificate

Candidates with previous graduate coursework may earn a graduate certificate in Catholic School Leadership by completing an individualized program of study with a minimum of 15 credits.

SCHOOL OF HEALTH PROFESSIONS

The School offers certificate programs for registered nurses who hold the bachelor’s degree and wish to develop advanced knowledge in administration and critical care. Credits successfully completed in these nondegree certificate programs may be applied to Marymount University’s master’s degree programs in Nursing. In addition to meeting graduate nondegree admission requirements, applicants must also meet with the faculty of the School of Health Professions. A Family Nurse Practitioner certificate program is offered for nurses who hold the M.S.N. degree.
