HPR 500 Exercise Physiology (3)
Focuses on maximizing human potential through understanding the body's responses and adaptations to exercise training.
HPR 501 Foundations of Health Education and Health Promotion (3)
Introduces the basic principles, philosophies, and functional areas of health promotion and education. Describes prevalent educational and psychological theories of learning and behavior change used by health educators in a variety of work settings.
HPR 502 Introduction to Public Health and Preventive Medicine (3)
Provides an overview of the field of public health, with emphasis on prevention of chronic and communicable diseases. This is a required course for students having no undergraduate degree in health education or related fields.
HPR 510 Health and Culture (3)
Examines culturally based value orientations, communication, and patterns of health care beliefs and practices among clients and health care providers. Emphasis is on the provision of culturally competent health care.
HPR 520 Epidemiology of Injury and Disease (3)
Study of the nature, prevention, control, and treatment of injuries and communicable and noncommunicable diseases. Examines epidemiological principles, methods, and strategies and the use of morbidity, mortality, and other vital statistics data in the scientific appraisal of community/organizational health. It is recommended that students take this course before NU 591.
HPR 525 Advanced Exercise Physiology (3)
Expands on concepts from HPR 500 Exercise Physiology to include an advanced review of bioenergetics, pulmonary function, cardiovascular physiology and pathology, musculoskeletal anatomy and physiology/pathophysiology, training techniques, diseases associated with a sedentary lifestyle, and health promotion. Prerequisite: admission to the Physical Therapy program or HPR 500.
HPR 534 Topics in Nutrition and Weight Management (3)
Presents scientific principles of nutrition, diet planning, and weight management. Includes current research on the role of nutrition in the prevention of disease and the causes of and treatments for obesity.
HPR 536 Stress Management (3)
Designed to help individuals better identify, understand, and manage their own stressors and stress response, as well as enable them to help others who are experiencing excessive stress.
HPR 540 Designing and Evaluating Health Promotion Programs (3)
Focuses on the design of effective learning programs: emphasizes objectives, learning activities, and program assessment. Evaluation includes construction/use of health-risk appraisals and a variety of health-related measures.
HPR 550 Management of Health Promotion Programs (3)
Considerations in managing health/fitness programs at the workplace and in other agencies. Includes budgeting, revenue, personnel, emergency procedures and safety, legal liability, facility management, staff development, marketing, record keeping, policies and procedures, and various management strategies.
HPR 560 Design of Adult Fitness Programs (3)
Provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely administer exercise tests to adults in various states of health, to analyze results, and to prescribe appropriate exercise. Prerequisite: HPR 500 or permission of instructor.
HPR 565 Graded Exercise Testing (3)
Presents concepts in fitness testing and exercise prescription for the individual with cardiorespiratory disease. Both the practice of cardiac rehabilitation and the administration of cardiac rehabilitation programs are included. Prerequisite: HPR 500 or permission of instructor.
HPR 588 Selected Topics in Health (3)
A seminar that examines a different topical issue in health each time it is offered.
HPR 598 Internship (3)
On-the-job application of knowledge and skills that were developed during coursework in the Health Promotion Management program. The internship is primarily intended for the student who has little work experience, however individuals with considerable experience who desire exposure to a new health promotion setting may also take the internship.
HPR 599 Research Project (3)
An individual investigation of a topic in health promotion/health education, with relevance to elective concentration chosen by the student. Under direction of a faculty advisor, student will demonstrate the ability to conduct independent research and prepare a research paper. Prerequisite: permission of instructor.
