CIS 101 Computer Applications I (3)
The goal of this course is to develop computer literacy by providing laboratory experience using computers as they are typically used in daily and professional applications. To achieve this goal the course will survey personal computers, focusing on productive software such as word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, and databases. The course also introduces the uses and applications of the Web.
CIS 102 Computer Applications II (3)
Addresses computer concepts including networking, telecommunications, and the Internet. The course also introduces the use of Web browsers, FTP, and Web page design using HTML. Prerequisite: CIS 101 or equivalent.
CIS 110 Introduction to Computer Information Systems (3)
An introduction to the role and impact of the computer in modern organizations. Included is the study of hardware, software, telecommunications, application development, data processing, and principles of information systems. Prerequisite: CIS 101 or equivalent.
CIS 120 Programming Concepts (3)
A study of the basic techniques of program development in a business environment. This course begins with the understanding of algorithms and the use of techniques, such as flowcharts and pseudocode, to analyze a problem and develop the algorithm for later programming. This course continues the use of the Visual Basic programming language to develop graphical user interfaces (GUIs) and to perform simple algorithms. It also covers the reading and writing of files in Visual Basic and the concept and use of arrays. Prerequisite: CIS 095 or equivalent.
CIS 125 Application Development on the Web (3)
Expands on programming techniques to develop interactive applications for the Web. This is primarily a survey course with some hands-on experience with Visual Basic and other languages. The course begins with the development of a static Web page in HTML and then dynamic characteristics are added using server-side technologies. It builds on the Visual Basic programming concepts from CIS 120. It also looks at scripting languages for server-side applications, such as XML, Cold Fusion, PHP, and Perl. Prerequisite: CIS 120.
CIS 210 Systems Analysis (3)
An introduction to systems development life cycle issues, concerns, and methods. Both structured and object-oriented analysis techniques are considered. Prerequisites: CIS 097-098, CIS 110 and MA 132, or equivalents.
CIS 220 Systems Design (3)
A study of the practical methods for designing computer systems. Students will learn design strategies and desirable design qualities, and apply those in a major class project. Prerequisites: CIS 210 and MA 155 or permission of department chair.
CIS 300 Introduction to Decision Analysis (3)
This course introduces the topics of the decision process, the primary models of decision making, and how information is used for decision support. A major emphasis of the course is an introduction to decision analysis, including practical experience in modeling decisions, uncertainty, and preferences. The course also provides an introduction to decision support systems, as implemented on microcomputers. Prerequisites: CIS 096, CIS 120, and CIS 220; MA 132 or MSC 300; or permission of department chair.
CIS 310 Database Systems Applications (3)
This course teaches database models, logical and physical database design, applications development, and database administration. Prerequisites: CIS 120 and CIS 220 or permission of department chair.
CIS 312 System Software and Hardware (3)
Provides the student with a broad background in system software and hardware and in how these components work together to support user application programs. The course also introduces the concepts of operating systems, compilers, and interpreters. In addition, this course examines factors that affect computer hardware design and the major hardware components. Prerequisite: CIS 210 or permission of department chair.
CIS 320 Human Factors in Computer Information Systems (3)
Examines a variety of human needs in developing, operating, and using information systems. Prerequisite: CIS 220 or permission of department chair.
CIS 330 Distributed Processing and Telecommunications (3)
Studies the concepts and the technology of telecommunication and distributed processing. Topics include managerial concerns and interests, hardware, systems design, and operational factors. Prerequisite: CIS 220 or permission of department chair.
