Social Entrepreneurship (Minor)

This interdisciplinary minor is open to students in any major. It is designed for students who are socially minded entrepreneurs wishing to develop skills in the nonprofit and for-profit sectors. Students analyze social issues in today’s global economy and learn how to apply business skills to address those issues, thereby fostering change. Students will be required to complete a community-based project of inquiry for their final project.

This minor provides students with the opportunity to develop their sense of civic responsibility and business prowess to address social issues through enterprise. The social entrepreneurship minor allows students to take courses in both the School of Business Administration and School of Education and Human Services. This minor also provides a strong base for future additional studies in business, sociology, education, and law.

Sustainability (Minor)

The minor in sustainability prepares students from any major to become environmentally literate citizens who can incorporate sustainable practices in their lives and careers. As an interdisciplinary program, it provides students with the opportunity to focus and refine the knowledge gained from their own fields of study by adding the perspective of other disciplines. Principles of sustainability are embedded within Marymount’s Catholic heritage, which calls for all to promote stewardship of the Earth. Sustainability has become an integral part of several university programs of study, and the minor will allow students who have a compelling interest in sustainability to both improve their knowledge by integrating courses from a variety of fields, and to acquire an additional credential that may enhance their marketability.

This minor culminates with a project or internship. At the completion of the project or internship, the student will publicly demonstrate the results of this experiential learning opportunity with a performance, display, or presentation. A member of the Sustainability Minor Faculty Steering Committee will work with the student’s advisor to ensure that the project or internship is in the area of sustainability and to approve the public demonstration.

BIO 110 Introduction to Environmental Science

A minimum of 11 additional credits from the following: GEOL 102 Principles of Geology, ECO 304 Environmental Economics, ID 336 Principles of Sustainable Design, MKT 204 Sustainable Marketing, SOC 351 Addressing Injustice: Qualitative Research Methods, approved sustainability-themed sections of DSC 101 DISCOVER First-Year Seminar or DSC 201 Transfer Student Experience, and approved sustainability-themed study abroad courses

Project or internship in the student’s major field in the area of sustainability (3 credits)
